Finding Robust Solutions to Stable Marriage

چکیده
We study the notion of robustness in stable matching problems. We first define robustness by introducing (a,b)-supermatches. An (a, b)-supermatch is a stable matching in which if any a pairs break up it is possible to find another stable matching by changing the partners of those a pairs and the partners of at most b other pairs. In this context, we define the most robust stable matching as a (1, b)supermatch where b is minimum. We first show that checking whether a given stable matching is a (1, b)-supermatch can be done in polynomial time. Next, we use this procedure to design a constraint programming model, a local search approach, and a genetic algorithm to find the most robust stable matching. Our empirical evaluation on large instances show that local search outperforms the other approaches.

On the Complexity of Robust Stable Marriage
Robust Stable Marriage (RSM) is a variant of the classical Stable Marriage problem, where the robustness of a given stable matching is measured by the number of modifications required for repairing it in case an unforeseen event occurs. We focus on the complexity of finding an (a, b)-supermatch. An (a, b)-supermatch is defined as a stable matching in which if any a (non-fixed) men/women break u...
متن کاملA New Approach Generating Robust and Stable Schedules in m-Machine Flow Shop Scheduling Problems: A Case Study
This paper considers a scheduling problem with uncertain processing times and machine breakdowns in industriall/office workplaces and solves it via a novel robust optimization method. In the traditional robust optimization, the solution robustness is maintained only for a specific set of scenarios, which may worsen the situation for new scenarios. Thus, a two-stage predictive algorithm is prop...
متن کاملEfficient algorithms for generalized Stable Marriage and Roommates problems
We consider a generalisation of the Stable Roommates problem (sr), in which preference lists may be partially ordered and forbidden pairs may be present, denoted by srpf. This includes, as a special case, a corresponding generalisation of the classical Stable Marriage problem (sm), denoted by smpf. By extending previous work of Feder, we give a two-step reduction from srpf to 2-sat. This has ma...
متن کاملAn Empirical Study of the Stable Marriage Problem with Ties and Incomplete Lists
We present the first complete algorithm for the SMTI problem, the stable marriage problem with ties and incomplete lists. We do this in the form of a constraint programming encoding of the problem. With this we are able to carry out the first empirical study of the complete solution of SMTI instances. In the stable marriage problem (SM) [5] we have men and women. Each man ranks the women, givin...
متن کاملThe Geometry of Fractional Stable Matchings and Its Applications
We study the classical stable marriage and stable roommates problems using a polyhedral approach. We propose a new LP formulation for the stable roommates problem, which has a feasible solution if and only if the underlying roommates problem has a stable matching. Furthermore, for certain special weight functions on the edges, we construct a 2-approximation algorithm for the optimal stable room...
